What Do you Look for in A good Balm?

Did you know most store-bought lip balms use petroleum and synthetic fragrances?

Petroleum Jelly (Petrolatum)

  • Creates a barrier to prevent moisture loss

  • But it doesn’t actually hydrate — it just sits on the surface

  • Often derived from crude oil (unless highly refined)

Paraffin or Mineral Oil

  • By-products of petroleum

  • Can clog pores or feel heavy on sensitive skin

  • Offer temporary relief but don’t repair or nourish

Synthetic Fragrances and Flavors

  • Make the balm smell or taste good

  • But can irritate sensitive lips or trigger allergic reactions

  • Often contain hidden chemicals not listed on the label

Artificial Colors

  • Added to give tinted lip balms a vibrant look

  • May contain dyes or chemicals that dry out lips over time

Silicones

  • Create a slick, smooth texture

  • But can trap dead skin and interfere with natural renewal

⚠️ Why Some Non-Natural Balms May Make Lips Feel Worse?

You may notice that with some store-bought balms:

  • You apply more often

  • Lips feel dry again shortly after

  • They create a dependency without solving the issue

That’s because these balms focus on coating, not healing.
